ALDE leader said that a potential impeachment against President Basescu would not harm Romania’s European course.

Graham Watson MEP, leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament (ALDE), said Monday that Romania faces “plenty of challenges,” yet the country is on the right track and has competent leaders.
“Romania faces plenty of challenges,” Watson said, while in Timisoara, where the ALDE Bureau session is being held. Having met in Bucharest with President of the National Liberal Party (PNL) and Romania’s Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu yesterday, Watson also said that President Traian Basescu’s potential suspension would not jeopardise Romania’s successful European integration.
The meeting of the ALDE Bureau, the European Parliament’s third-largest group, is unfolding in Bucharest and Timisoara, Monday and Tuesday. Along the topics for debate by the European Liberals, the political project for Romania’s development during the EU post-accession period and the means by which Romania can access and make the best use of European funding.
Graham Watson, Adrian Cioroianu and the President of the Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR), Annemie Neyts, are due to meet with ministers, MPs and EMPs of the National Liberal and Conservative Parties. The ALDE leadership will examine European projects with representative of the civil society, religious denominations and of ethnic communities in Romania.
