Bulgaria will continue assissting Iraq's stabilisation and reconstruction, PM Sergey Stanishev said in Baghdad.
Stanishev arrived in Baghdad on a surprise visit on Tuesday, ten days after his previously planned trip was cancelled. He is accompanied by his deputy and Foreign Affairs Minister Ivaylo Kalfin.
He met with his Iraqi counterpart Nuri al-Maliki and President Jalil Talabani and discussed the horizons for cooperation between the two countries. There were also discussed the political situation in Iraq, security issues and stabilisation of the country.
The local institutions have the main responsibility for Iraq's stabilisation though, Stanishev said. Key will also be Iraq's cooperation with neighbouring states.
Bulgaria's PM met the Balkan country's force providing for security in camp Ashraf. He talked to the commandment of the unit.
Col. Rumen Petrov informed Stanishev on the situation in Ashraf, the tasks of the Bulgarian servicemen and the difficulties they are faced with.
Stanishev had dinner with the Bulgarian unit and expressed his admiration for their professionalism and high morale. He assured them they have the full support of the Bulgarian government.
